Walking the Wales Coast Path - Pembrokeshire - Amroth to Saundersfoot

I don’t think it would be possible to count how many times I have been to Amroth, it is one of our favourite places in Pembrokeshire for a day out with the children. With a gorgeous beach, the stunning Colby Woodland Garden, and just a 50 minute drive from our house, what’s not to love. However, when researching Wales coast path walks, I soon realised I hadn’t covered any of the path around Amroth.

When I have to do a walk by myself I usually get a bit more anxious about the walk, but knowing exactly where to park in Amroth, and being familiar with the area, it seemed like a good place to do a solo walk.

The walk starts off with a very steep hill, just to test your commitment to the cause I think. It was very muddy and slippy as it was winter, but I got to the top without falling over or being too out of breath, which felt like quite the achievement to be honest. I was even congratulated at the top by a passer by, validating my feeling of pride. Another helpful local told me a different path I could take on the walk back down if I didn’t want to risk the slip and slide, but I risked it on the way back too and lived to tell the tale.

Once you’ve climbed that hill though you are rewarded with gorgeous views all along the path to the next beach; Wiseman’s Bridge. You do have to walk along the road for a short section of the path, but there wasn’t much traffic, and you soon get down to the beach.

Wiseman’s bridge was a pleasant surprise. I’d driven past it once before and hadn’t thought much of it, but walking along the beach I soon saw how stunning it was, and was sorry I’d neglected it thus far. At the end of the beach I soon realised that the coastal path now went through a tunnel right through the side of the cliff. I couldn’t quite believe it at first, but it was a very fun little addition to the walk, and I’m excited to show it to the kids when I can get them back there!

Once through to the other side I arrived at Saundersfoot. I had visited Saundersfoot once before on a sunny day and to be honest it was far too busy for my tastes and I wasn’t sure why people liked it so much. However, visiting it on a sunny winter’s day I could see it in a whole new light and very much enjoyed my wander across the beach.

Needing to get home for the school run meant I couldn’t go any further on this occasion, so I had to turn back and start the walk back to Amroth again, but it was a very enjoyable walk and a mostly flat and easy section of the path too, and no doubt one I’ll walk again in the future with the family.
